Maqbarat-o-Shoara or The Tomb of Poets, formerly known as Sorkh Ab poets’ tombs, is one of the historic cemeteries of Tabriz city. This cemetery houses 410 poets and philosophers of Iran which is the only one of its kind in the entire world.
Many famous poets such as Khaghani, Asadi Tusi, Qatran Tabrizi, Shahriyar, as well as some of famous people like Seqat-ol-Eslam Tabrizi who was Iranian nationalist who fight against central government for having constitutional house in Iran are buried here.
The beautiful and spiritual shrine of Imamzadeh Seyyed Hamzah is also located in this place. (Walk to the mosque and shrine next to tomb of poets’ monument)
The first time that the name of Sorkh Ab tombs was mention is in the Nozhat-ol Gholub book date back to 740 lunar calendars (1339 AD). This book is written by Hamdallah Mustawfi, the famous Persian historian, Geographer, epic poet writer of Iran.
The magnificence and sanctity of the Sorkhab soil was the spark to construct the memorial of these great poets and philosophers of Iran. Therefore, there was a competition to design the monument for it that the design of Gholam Reza Farzanmehr was selected. So in September of 1971the construction of this memorial started.
