Qaleh Chay is a tourist area in east Azerbaijan province that was located in Ajabshir County and attracts annually tourists and many enthusiasts to itself.
Qaleh Chay tourist region with distance of 55 kilometers from center of Ajabshir County is full of historical and cultural attractions which have been gathered in this area. Nige-chi historic catacomb, Chahar-barud rocky village, and two mineral water springs are among the most prominent attractions.
Qaleh Chay district in Ajabshir County has five recorded historic castles, dating back to first millennium before Christ, and it includes zahhak castle, Kohan-Dezh, Javan Qaleh, and Qaleh-e-Houri.
Zahhak castle in Ajabshir County with more than three thousand year of antiquity is above “Monfared” mountain with many anecdotes, and it has been an important places of Mana and Median tribes. This castle is one of the spectacular places that is erected in 2300 meter height from “Qaleh Chay” riverbed in archaic period of Iran, and it has memorial of many opuses inside it and in its surrounding from Achaemenid, Parthian, Sasanian eras and period of Islamic civilization. Its oldness dated back to Median and Mana tribes and many different names have been mentioned for it in history including Zahhak, Ezhdehak, Qiz Qaleh si, Dash Qaleh si, Baroas, Royi Dezh and Qaleh guyi.
Zahhak castle of Ajabshir was recorded in list of national remnants with register number 22544 by tourism and cultural heritage organization in 1386 (2007).
