With its surrounding mountains, East Azerbaijan Province has several ancient castles most of which date back to pre-Islamic period. Aghja Castle is one of those strongholds. It is located 50 kilometers northwest of Varzaqan City.
The castle goes back to Arsacid period, yet it was used in Sassanid and post-Islamic periods as well.
